Man charged with capital murder of La Garda detective

A 44-year-old Mayo man has been charged with the capital murder of a Garda detective over the summer.

Stephen Silver, of Aughaward, Foxford, Co Mayo, was charged this morning with the capital murder of Det Garda Colm Horkan on June 17 in Castlerea, Co Roscommon.

Silver has been detained since June for the murder of 49-year-old Det Garda Horkan.

Judge Alan Mitchell was informed in Castlerea District Court this morning that there was an additional charge of capital murder.

Garda Helen Gillen said that she arrested Mr. Silver in Castlerea today at 11:29 a.m. M. Y charged him with the capital murder of Det Garda Horkan on June 17 in Castlerea. He said Silver did not respond to the charge after a warning.

Defense attorney Gearoid Geraghty said he had no questions. Judge Mitchell granted a request for free legal aid.

Superintendent Tom Colsh said the original murder charge stood at this time, but could be dropped at a later date.

He said the state’s request was to place Mr. Silver in pre-trial detention at Midland Prison to appear via video link next Friday at Harristown District Court in Roscommon.

Supt Colsh said he hopes to have an indication on Friday, December 4, when the test book will be ready.

Silver did not speak during the brief four-minute hearing.
