A 72-year-old man has appeared in Cork district court on 28 counts of sexual assault and indecent stemming from a Garda investigation into the allegations of former boy scouts.
David Barry, described in court as a former businessman and domiciled at ‘Montrose’, 17 Firgrove Gardens, Bishopstown, Cork, was arrested at his home this morning.
The 28 charges involve eight alleged injuries.
Barry also faces an additional charge of attempted sexual assault.
The alleged injured were children between the ages of 12 and 16 at the time.
The crimes are alleged to have occurred over a 19-year period between 1986 and 2005 at a location in Cork City.
Garda Detective Gary Duggan from Bishopstown Garda Station in Cork gave evidence of indicting Mr. Barry this morning at Togher Garda Station.
The court was informed that the Director of the Public Ministry had ordered the indictment trial in the Circuit Criminal Court.
The court was told that the DPP had also given its consent for Mr. Barry to be sent to the Circuit Criminal Court to sentence him in a signed guilty plea.
Barry’s attorney, Daithí Ó Donnabháin, said an evidence book would be needed and the case was postponed until January 27.
The court granted Mr. Barry bail.
Judge Olan Kelleher said information that could lead to the identification of any of the alleged injured parties in the case could not be published or transmitted.
