Man arrested in investigation into attacks on women in Belfast

A man was arrested by detectives investigating a series of incidents during which several women were assaulted and stabbed in South Belfast.

The 38-year-old man was taken to the Musgrave PSNI station for questioning.

Several women were assaulted or stabbed in a series of incidents in south Belfast on Monday night.

The Belfast area coordinator, Chief Superintendent Simon Walls, had asked the public for help in identifying a possible suspect.

“The first incident occurred at approximately 7.42pm Monday night at Castle Place, in which a pedestrian was stabbed,” he said.

“The second stabbing occurred at 7.51 pm on Ormeau Avenue between Linenhall Street and Adelaide Street Junctions.

“The third stabbing occurred at 8:56 pm in Donegall Square West.

“In the fourth incident, which occurred sometime between 8:56 pm and 9:01 pm on Dublin Road, a woman was punched in the neck.

“In the fifth incident at 9:01 pm, another woman was stabbed while walking down University Road near Mount Charles.

“In the sixth incident, a woman was punched in the neck on Upper Lisburn Road, near Dunluce Avenue, around 9:03 pm and we believe it was the same man.”
