Man arrested in Cork for alleged pension fraud over an alleged 30-year period

Gardaí has ​​arrested a man in connection with an alleged pension fraud worth more than € 500,000 over a period of 30 years.

A man was arrested in connection with an alleged pension fraud that has taken place since 1987.

The man, in his fifties, was arrested after a joint operation between the Gardaí and the Department of Employment and Social Protection.

Later, a search of the man’s home found almost € 10,000 in cash.

A statement from the Gardaí said:

“As part of a joint investigation between An Garda Síochána and the Department of Labor Affairs and Social Protection (DEASP), Gardaí arrested a man, in his 50s, in Cork City this morning, October 9, 2020.

“Gardaí and DEASP investigators later conducted a search of a house in Co. Cork, where they seized € 9,800 in cash.

“The alleged pension fraud has been taking place since 1987 with more than € 500,000 claimed.” The man is currently detained at Bridewell Garda Station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Speaking today at Anglesea Street Garda Station, Detective Inspector Daniel Coholan said:

“Gardaí and the Department of Labor Affairs and Social Protection have a long-standing relationship that aims to target those who try to defraud the state.”
