Police investigating a video of a boy driving a truck at high speed on the M1 motorway in Northern Ireland arrested a man on suspicion of cruelty.
Police were alerted after the staggering eight seconds of footage appeared on social media.
A man is heard making the recording urging the smiling girl, around 10 years old, to “keep her off” the shoulder as they head east into Co Tyrone.
Two cars pass the truck during the video while the boy, sitting near the wheel, holds on tight.
Another vehicle is visible later during the recording, made near the Dungannon slipway.
‘IS LAD OK THERE?’
The invisible man is heard saying, “Okay, boy?” and the boy turns to him and answers “Yes” before the man asks, “Are you in the blast?”
A moment later, when the truck runs close to the shoulder, the man urges, “Ah, pick it up, pick it up, little stick, fuck it, keep it out.”
Locals have criticized the adult involved for allowing the child to pilot the HGV.
The local DUP councilor said it was “shocking.”
‘Reckless and careless’
He added: “We have had many accidents on that road recently and many that have resulted in fatalities.
“People want the roads to be safe, but the behavior in the video is reckless and careless.”
On Thursday, mid-Ulster police called anyone who recognized the boy or knew anything about the incident to get in touch.
In a statement Friday they said a man was being questioned.
It read: “Police investigating an incident in which a video of a young man driving a truck was shared online arrested a 37-year-old man in the Cookstown area.”
They said they were speaking to him “on suspicion of a number of crimes, including complicity in driving while disqualified on the grounds of age and cruelty to children. “The man is currently in custody assisting officers with their investigations.”
