The man has been placed on remand after appearing in Dundalk District Court to appear again next week.

A 47-year-old man has appeared before a special hearing in the Dundalk District Court charged with murdering a schoolboy.

Gerard Cruise with an address in Rathmullan Park, Drogheda is charged with committing the alleged crime earlier this year.

Det. Sergeant Peter Cooney gave evidence of having arrested the defendant at 12:18 this morning and charged at 12:50 in the morning.

The court heard that the 47-year-old did not respond when the charge was presented after a warning.

Judge Eirinn McKiernan took him into custody at Drogheda District Court, sitting in Dundalk next Friday to appear via video link, and postponed the case for the preparation and delivery of an evidence book.

The defense attorney also requested legal assistance because her client receives a disability allowance.

The defendants arrive at Dundalk District Court this afternoon.
