The day before Hejazi’s tragic death, the Coast Guard said recent calls for search and rescue resources have seen a notable increase in requests to help walkers cut off by the tide and people who have difficulty swimming in open waters.

They said that with many people living near the shore exercising in or by the water, they are asking the public to be cautious when participating in any coastal or aquatic activities.

Despite the recent warm weather, sea temperatures remain at their coldest at this time of year.

Gerard O’Flynn, Irish Coast Guard Chief of Operations, said: “Last year saw an increase in activities such as swimming in open water and incidents involving the use of inflatable toys that are not suitable for open water.
