Ryan Moore compared Longines Hong Kong Vase winner Mogul to the great Dylan Thomas coached by Aidan O’Brien, after capturing a second top-tier hit in impressive fashion.
The respected three-year-old traveled hard from a prominent position before showing off an electric twist standing up the straight to overtake locally-trained favorite Exultant and stay for a three-length victory.
The success started off a big day for Moore, who then guided Japan-trained outsider Danon Smash to a surprise Sprint victory from the widest draw.
However, Magical was only able to finish a close third in the Hong Kong Cup behind Normcore, another big Japanese winner.
Moore is already looking for more success for Mogul and has even compared him to six-time top-level winner Dylan Thomas. That great Danehill son won the Arc when he was four in 2007, and Unibet cut Mogul to 12-1 (from 33-1) to complete the same feat.
Moore said: “He came in very comfortably and still lacks a bit of maturity. I wouldn’t have wanted to be up front when he was, but he was going and I had to commit. I was waiting when I was up front, take a good look and take it all in.
“He is a beautiful looking horse and reminds me of Dylan Thomas. I never rode him, but he is a similar type of horse with a lot of skill and a good mind.”
Mogul, one of O’Brien’s Arc’s absentees this season, was last seen finishing fifth in the Breeders’ Cup Turf behind Tarnawa.
Hong Kong Vase result
Sunday’s success makes Aidan O’Brien the leading coach in Hong Kong Vase with three victories in total, the previous two thanks to the efforts of Highland Reel in 2015 and 2017.
O’Brien told Sky Sports: “We are delighted with him. He’s a big, powerful, strong horse and he’s built like a miler, and only when we’ve been riding him with patience and more for speed than endurance have we seen the best of him. Ryan gave it a lovely ride and it settled down well and sped up really well.
“Pierre [Charles Boudot] rode it like that at Longchamp [Grand Prix de Paris] but we weren’t sure how strong the rhythm in front of him would have to be for him to produce that standing turn. It wasn’t a crazy beat and it still did, so we were really happy with that.
“We really want to see him next year. Getting a clean run is a great help to him. Anything from a mile and a quarter to a mile and a half on good terrain and taking our time with him is probably the key for him.
“It would be an exciting horse for next year and we believe another year will do him no harm.”
