Luke ‘Ming’ Flanagan, the independent MEP, has said that a comment on Twitter late at night about the nude photos of former Green Party candidate Saoirse McHugh were the result of her account being hacked.

His account tweeted “Sapirse mchugh photo skinny dipping (sp)” at 2.50 am Monday morning, but the former TD moved in to insist that hackers were to blame.

The tweet in question was deleted, but several different versions of the tweet were shared online via screenshots of the comment.

It is possible that the tweet referred to photos of Ms McHugh swimming that previously appeared in The Guardian newspaper.

“I just changed my password. I think my account was compromised. I am contacting Twitter to establish what happened (sp). Some nasty people out there. Take care,” he tweeted.

McHugh has since said that Flanagan contacted her to explain what had happened.

She said she was not aware of the problem prior to her contact.

McHugh said he accepts Flanagan’s comments.
