An adorable dog avoided a “Pretty Christmas” thanks to the swift actions of the heroic Coast Guard teams tonight.

Cute little dog Poppy struggled in the water off the shore of Bull Island today.

Members of the public tried to help the distraught cub, but were unable to get her out of the water.

A team from the Howth unit of the Irish Coast Guard jumped into action, making sure the brave rescuers were out of the water before getting Poppy safely back to shore.

The lucky pet is soon reunited with his grateful owner and is recovering well from his ordeal.

The Coast Guard said: “Tonight the Irish Coast Guard in Howth was tasked with a dog (Poppy) that appeared to be in distress in the water near Bull Island.

“Upon arriving at the scene, members of the public had entered the water attempting to mount a rescue.

“After ensuring that members of the public were out of the water, the team set out to rescue Poppy, who was in distress on the other side of the estuary.

“With a few quick actions, the Coast Guard was able to get it out of the water and return it safely to its owner. If you see someone or an animal in distress, in the water or on the shore, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard.

“Fortunately, Poppy is back safely with her owner, and no one was injured, avoiding a potentially wow Christmas …”
