Parents of students attending a girls’ high school in Longford were asked to pick up their children on Thursday after a confirmed case of Covid-19.
Meán Scoil Mhuire, Longford Town, which has more than 550 students and 40 employees, will be closed until October 19, but classes will continue online.
Independent local councilman Gerry Warnock, who sits on the high school’s board of directors, said the move was taken as a precaution.
“They are very capable of dealing with it, they had gotten ahead of themselves,” he said.
“It was very likely that there would be a setting like this in a school. . . We will have to deal with this for a while, this will probably be a common thing in the next few weeks. “
School will be closed until October 19, but classes will continue online.
Longford Borough Cathaoirleach alumnus Peggy Nolan said she knew parents had been advised to pick up their children and expressed full confidence in the board’s quick response.
“This is bad news, but you can expect the children to go back to school,” he said. “It’s my old school and I have full confidence that all [public health] procedures will be followed. ”
School management could not be reached for comment Thursday night, but Principal Aoife Mulrennan had reportedly confirmed that someone within the school had tested positive for Covid-19 and several staff members had to isolate themselves. . Classes will continue online on Friday.
Fine Gael local councilman John Browne said the situation was a “great disappointment.”
“Hopefully it will be resolved quickly and have no undue effects,” he said.
“It is a large school, it is a long-standing school and major renovations were made to prepare it for the new school term.”
