CENTRAL PIECE
While Virgil van Dijk Y Joe gomez Both have undergone successful surgery to repair their respective knees, the wait for them to return will be long and long. So Liverpool will need some contingency plans.
The athletic report on four possible core defensive targets. Dayot Upamecano was ‘at the top of his wanted list’ before next summer for a purported £ 40 million fee, but it is unclear if that could be rushed in the winter.
Liverpool are also ‘interested’ in Brighton’s Ben White, with Schalke defender Ozan Kabak ‘under consideration’. Gleison Bremer, the 23-year-old who currently impresses in Turin, is also seen as one of Liverpool’s many.
The Brazilian has been linked to Everton recently. Copying your partner’s homework is now just a smart exploration. All four are surely better but much more expensive than surprise target Daryl Janmaat.
STAMPED SERVICE
The Daily Mirror suggests that the Premier League champions “will be forced into the January transfer stampede.”
While they were already ‘considering’ replacing Van Dijk temporarily in the winter, Gomez’s setback is likely to solidify those plans. Kabak is mentioned again, albeit rather as “a medium-term perspective.”
Jurgen Klopp’s search for an “experienced” player could lead him to Upamecano – “a deal would make economic and game sense” – or Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly. It seems a bit drastic and expensive, but at least Don Hutchison is finally being heard.
BOAT RENTAL
It is unknown whether or not Jerome Boateng has been targeted at Anfield. Three Premier League clubs are said to be after a player whose contract with Bayern Munich expires next summer and will not be renewed. Liverpool is not among them.

Chelsea have demonstrated the rejuvenating effect that an elegant and seasoned 30-something midfielder can have on a Premier League defense. However, it would be fascinating to see him at Arsenal. And Boateng’s injury history would surely be reviewed before he was rejected by José Mourinho.
