Debenhams liquidators withdraw severance settlement offer

Mandate Trade Union has expressed “disappointment” after Debenhams Ireland liquidators withdrew their severance pay offer.

In a statement issued this morning, the liquidator said: Following the actions of certain people overnight, it has now become clear that the offer is not acceptable to former employees and others. In light of these developments, the Liquidators formally withdrew their support for the settlement agreement this morning. The Liquidators will not negotiate any further settlement agreements with former employees. ”

Gerry Light, Deputy Secretary General of the Mandate, has called on all parties to re-engage to find a satisfactory resolution.

Light said: “These workers have spent the last 152 days on strike outside their workplace because their employer, Debenhams Ireland, ruled them out completely. The law allowed that company to break the worker’s redundancy agreement and transfer valuable assets to the UK parent company, leaving its workers with nothing.

“The workers have lobbied the government to change the legislation since last April and yet we haven’t seen anything. What should have happened is the immediate implementation of the Duffy / Cahill report so that these workers could get what they are owed. Instead, we have seen procrastination as these workers stand in the rain. Is it any wonder that frustration is overflowing?
