Ireland is poised for another dramatic day of developments as we fight to suppress a third wave of coronavirus.

Health officials are set to announce the latest number of cases tonight, as the country faces a further surge in Covid-19 infections.

It comes after Ireland recorded another 3,569 Covid-19 cases last night as infection rates continue to rise.

Tragically, 63 more people have died after battling the deadly virus.

The latest figures were released in a statement by the National Public Health Emergency Team on Wednesday night.

It brings the total number of diagnosed cases in Ireland to 159,144, while the death toll is now 2,460.

1,119 of the new cases are in Dublin, 416 in Cork, 200 in Galway, 182 in Louth and 169 in Waterford. The remaining 1,483 cases are spread across all other counties.

Dr. Tony Holohan, Health Department Medical Director, said: “We are seeing some early signs of progress with the daily case numbers and positivity rates. We may have some hope in them, but we have a long, long way to go. In the coming weeks, we will have to tap into our spring endurance reserves as we can expect hospitalizations, ICU admissions and COVID-19 related mortality to increase day by day. “

“The best way we can all support each other now is to keep ourselves apart. Unfortunately, what we are seeing now is the result of the very high number of confirmed cases daily that we experience for weeks ahead. To ensure that our hospitals and loved ones remain protected and alive to receive the vaccine, please continue to follow public health advice and stay home. “

On the other hand, Stephen Donnelly said that the vaccine updates will be available starting this weekend.

Following the arrival of the Moderna vaccine in the country, the Minister of Health has said that all people who live or work in a nursing home must receive at least their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine before the week of Sunday.

70,000 healthcare workers will also have taken their first hit by that date, 1,500,000 in the second quarter and more again in the third quarter.

Separately, Donnelly said that more than half of new Covid-19 infections are linked to the UK variant and the latest vaccine figures will be available from the Covid data center online from this end. weekly with regular updates below.
