Five major changes if Ireland goes to level three at Christmas
Ireland is on track to emerge from a level five lockdown out of six weeks before December 1, provided the number of cases continues to decline.
Dr. Tony Holohan confirmed yesterday that progress is being made, but much remains to be done.
However, he said he was “optimistic and hopeful” that the restrictions will be eased by the end of the month.
NPHET will meet on Thursday, November 26 to make a final recommendation to the government.
Taoiseach Micheal Martin has also suggested that even if we move to Level Three next month, he might offer some mods for certain sectors, depending on the level of the virus here.
Here’s a quick list of the changes we’re most likely to see if we enter Level Three on December 1:
1. 5km travel limit removed
One of the most important rules is one that remains largely undecided. While the current 5km non-essential travel limit will almost certainly be lifted, we don’t know how much or when it will happen.
The Tier Three rules dictate that you should only leave your own county for essential reasons.
And it was reported this morning that the government is considering maintaining the county travel ban for at least two weeks after Dec. 1, lifting it slightly before Christmas.
However, Fianna Fail has been pushing Micheal Martin to move to Level Two in December, which means that all travel within Ireland would be allowed.
There’s a lot of uncertainty, but it seems likely at this stage that by Christmas itself we will be allowed to move within our own county at least, and probably most of the country.
2. Outdoor gatherings are allowed
Under Level Three restrictions, gatherings of up to 15 people are allowed, as the government allows organized and controlled settings, such as outdoor arts events and training events.
3. Restaurants and some pubs were allowed to reopen
One of the most vital changes for the hospitality industry, under level three, some pubs and restaurants may open their doors again.
However, it was reported yesterday that wet bars that don’t serve food may not reopen next month with modified plans.
4. Reopening of retail stores is allowed.
A big change so close to Christmas, under Level Three all stores and malls are allowed to open, provided that social distancing guidelines and measures are strictly adhered to. There are already rumors that certain stores may stay open 24 hours a day to deal with the Christmas rush.
5. Gyms authorized to reopen
One of the most controversial decisions under the Level Five lockdown was to force all gyms to close. However, there is likely good news for fitness fanatics, as gyms, leisure centers, and swimming pools may reopen under Level Three restrictions.
