A young child fights for his life in intensive care at an Irish hospital after contracting coronavirus.

The baby is under four years old and the youngest Covid-19 patient to be admitted to the ICU in Ireland since the outbreak started here.

This is according to the latest report from the Center for Health Protection Surveillance.

The incident was reported to HPSC between Wednesday and Saturday of last week.

Health officials have not released the sex, exact age or location of the patient.

It is also not known whether the young man has an underlying condition or not.

In total, three children under the age of 14 have been admitted to the ICU with the killer virus since the first case was recorded here.

Since the pandemic began, 26 children under the age of four have been hospitalized due to the disease.

The vast majority of coronavirus patients who have required intensive care treatment are over 55 years old.

Currently, there are six people with Covid-19 in ICUs across the country, while 48 people with the virus are being treated at the hospital.

This is significantly below the peak in mid-April that saw 881 patients being treated in the hospital and 155 in intensive care.
