A SECOND Covid-19 drive-in testing center has been opened in Limerick in response to the recent surge in cases of the disease.

The new center is based at St Joseph’s Health Campus on Mulgrave Street in Limerick City and will offer free testing to anyone who is referred by a GP.

Until now, the only drive-in test center in Limerick has been operating at LIT Gaelic Grounds.

Those who undergo the test should follow public health measures, including social distancing, do not travel by taxi or public transport, practice good personal hygiene and cover their faces at all times (including traveling to and from the center of tests).

When fully operational, the new center will be able to perform up to 600-700 tests per day if demand requires it.

Confirming the opening of the new center, HSE Mid West Community Health Director Maria Bridgeman (click above to listen), said: “We are very excited to make this announcement, the additional pop-up test center will be operational starting today and will increase its capacity from three to seven test bays in the coming days. This center will help us meet the growing demand for testing in a very accessible location for the community. It is important that the public continue to comply with all public health guidelines as the HSE continues its response to Covid-19.

Appointments for the new center will be offered starting at 2:00 p.m. this Wednesday and the testing center will be operational seven days a week between 8:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. starting tomorrow.

The HSE strongly encourages individuals who have been offered an appointment for testing to attend.
