Senior University of Limerick (UL) officials have warned students to take responsibility for stopping the spread of Covid-19.
The warning comes after Gardaí broke up a party at a home near UL early Tuesday morning when dozens of people gathered at a property in College Court.
The party, which was captured by one of the attendees on camera and shared on social networks, comes as a result of an increase in confirmed cases of Covid in the region in recent weeks.
The video shows a large crowd in a house with no effort in the way of social distancing and no PPE.
Gardaí confirmed that they attended the party to speak with neighbors.
“Gardaí attended and spoke with residents of a home in the College Court area at 1 am on September 15. A Garda Síochána continues to respond to meeting reports and engage with communities with a view to implementing the guidelines issued by the Government and HSE in order to minimize the impact of Covid-19 on our community as a whole.
“By supporting the Covid-19 public health guidelines, An Garda Síochána has adopted a graduated police response based on its tradition of consent policing. This has engaged Garda members, educating, encouraging and, as a last resort, enforcing. ”
A spokesperson for the University of Limerick stated that they do not comment on individual events, but Professor Kerstin Mey, president of UL, emphasized that students have a responsibility to their community.
“A great deal of planning has gone into establishing a safe environment to ensure that University of Limerick students can access the campus as part of the next academic year, starting on September 28.
“We rely on the cooperation of our students to ensure that this access to campus is maintained. I strongly urge all college students to understand their own individual roles in keeping our communities safe, ”said Professor Mey.
