Limerick is on track to retain its Munster title, after a deserved 3-23-2-17 win over Irish champion Tipperary in the provincial semi-final.

The Treaty outpointed the Premier in appalling weather conditions at Páirc Uí Chaoimh, with John Kiely’s bench leading the team home in the fourth quarter.

Tipp chose to play against the stormy wind in the first half and struggled in the early stages. The Treaty filled the middle third for Brian Hogan’s puck-outs, and the Premier struggled to break out of its own half early on. Limerick took a 0-6 to 0-1 lead before Tipp settled it.

The reigning champions Ireland gained a significant foothold in the game in the 20th minute, when Seamus Callanan showed supreme vision in picking Jake Morris behind Limerick’s rear. Club man Éire Óg Nenagh buried him past Nickie Quaid with an effort of one hand.

However, the men in green responded immediately, when Aaron Gillane fielded a long ball into the square. The club man Patrickswell lost his stick, but had the composure to kick the low sliotar in the bottom corner past Hogan.

Limerick pushed ahead, with points from Diarmaid Byrnes, Gearoid Hegarty and Graeme Mulcahy helping them take a 1-17 to 1-8 lead at the break.

Tipp started brilliantly in the second half, with three points in quick succession. But they suffered a setback when referee Liam Gordon extended his arms to signal a Limerick penalty, after Cathal Barrett dragged Gearoid Hegarty away.

Gillane buried him, hitting him low and down the middle after Hogan moved to the side. The Patrickswell striker followed with a point shortly after to bring the gap to 11, and Tipp had a mountain to climb.

The Premier received a lifeline as Noel McGrath scooped the ball straight off the ground and went unnoticed by the referees in the run-up to a John McGrath goal.

But the depth of the Limerick side was once again revealing, as backups David Reidy, Pat Ryan and Seamus recorded points, to help see the comfortable win as the latter scored a late goal to seal the win.
