They may be in hiding and have some of their children living on the other side of the world, but that didn’t stop them from celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary, together but separately.
Lillian and Gus Lehane toasted their diamond anniversary Saturday at their home on the south side of Cork City with some of their children watching from the backyard, while the others joined in line.
And they even received special video messages from their 13 grandchildren, eight in Cork, two in Dublin, two in Meath and one in Australia, as the family observed the rules of social estrangement.
The couple, who is over 80 years old and lives near the lake, married at the Santa María Cathedral on the north side of the city early on Easter Monday morning, April 18, 1960.
Lillian worked for several years in the Roche department store electrical department on St Patrick’s St, while Gus taught mathematics and Irish at North Mon for decades.
The Covid-19 outbreak forced the family to scrap their plans to commemorate the couple’s 60th wedding anniversary at the River Lee Hotel last weekend.
Instead, three of their six children, Angela and twins Ron and Finn, arrived in their backyard on Saturday afternoon, with a bottle of champagne and cake, while Peter, who lives in Meath, and Jim who lives in Dublin. , marked via Facetime
The oldest, Padraig, who lives in Melbourne, Australia, sent his best wishes later, given the time difference.
The couple sat inside, glass of bubbles in hand, surrounded by photographs of their wedding day, and remembered.
Finn said: “That was not how we planned to celebrate the anniversary, but it was a great tonic for them, a bit of happiness in the last difficult weeks.
“And we will celebrate the anniversary in royal style later this year when the restrictions are lifted, hopefully.”
