Leo Varadkar is telling the Irish abroad not to book flights home for Christmas.

The Tánaiste said that it is a moment of ‘honesty’ as it warned that the risk of Covid ‘resenting’ is too great for now.

Mr Varadkar has put it bluntly, telling the Dáil: “I think in terms of people booking flights for Christmas to go home, I advise them not to do so at this time.”

And he warned that there could actually be “an increased risk” of infections spreading from Northern Ireland due to the higher rates and different rules there.

The news will be a devastating blow for all the families in the country trying to save a decent Christmas from the ruins of a year devastated by Covid.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said last night that he wants to see a “reasonable Christmas”, but this will be very difficult to imagine if loved ones cannot plan flights home.

Mr. Varadkar said: “International travel is a risk.

“I think we have to be frank and honest about it.

“There is a risk that, as we go back down to very low levels, the country could be re-seeded by people traveling from abroad.”

He added: “I think in terms of people booking flights for Christmas to go home, I advise them not to do so at this time.

“I know it’s hard, I know it’s hard, but it’s six weeks until Christmas and it’s too early for people to book flights home.”

Mr. Varadkar also warned about the dangers of replanting from our friends and neighbors in Northern Ireland at Christmas.

He said: “Perhaps there is an increased risk at the time for people traveling north to south, where a different approach is being taken in Northern Ireland, that we may be seeded from Northern Ireland.”
