Leo Varadkar Shares ‘Worrying’ Update Ahead of Decision on New Covid Restrictions

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar has shared his concern and concern about the current Covid-19 situation, ahead of the government’s decision on what new restrictions should be implemented.

The number of people who have tested positive for the virus has seen a large increase in recent weeks, with Dublin now registering a worrying infection rate.

There is now growing speculation that new restrictions will be put in place for Dublin due to the high incidence rate.

One of the key measures in deciding whether further restrictions are required will be the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 inhabitants during the last 14 days, the government has confirmed.

The rate in Dublin is now at 89.1 in the latest figures released by the Center for Health Protection Surveillance.

However, this is even higher in certain parts of the capital, with Dublin North West reporting an incidence of 116.0, followed by Dublin South East with 107.5.

Government officials are meeting today to finalize the new “Living with Covid-19” plan that will provide a path for the country in the medium term.

And Tanaiste Leo Varadkar was not optimistic about what to expect, speaking at a press conference today, the Irish Mirror reports.

“The truth is that the situation in Dublin is worrying,” he admitted.

“We’ve seen a situation where the incidence of the virus was as low as 5 or 6 per 100,000 for 14 days, now it’s about 80.”

“Depending on how you count, a 10 or 20-fold increase in the virus in Dublin in the space of a few weeks.

“And while that has not yet resulted in a dramatic increase in people in hospitals or ICUs or deaths, the truth is that it will probably go in that direction if we don’t overcome it.”
