Tánaiste Leo Varadkar is expected to make a statement today addressing “serious” allegations related to his time as Taoiseach.

The opposition parties have said that the Tánaiste must clarify the accusations published today in the Village Magazine.

Louise O’Reilly, a Sinn Féin business spokeswoman, said Leo Varadkar has “serious questions to answer.”

“This is an extremely serious situation and the Fine Gael leader must make a full statement on the matter immediately,” said Ms. O’Reilly.

The allegations reportedly come from early 2019 from Varadkar’s time as Taoiseach.

Labor’s Enterprise spokesman Aodhán Ó Ríordáin said: “The Minister of Enterprise should clarify and confirm whether what is reported happened.”

Fianna Fáil’s TD Jim O’Callaghan also asked the Taoiseach to make a statement on the matter, describing this morning’s story as a “serious and specific allegation.”

“The Tánaiste should make a statement responding to the accusation and clarifying the situation,” O’Callaghan said through his Twitter account.

Meanwhile, the co-leader of the Social Democrats Róisín Shortall added her voice to the calls for Varadkar to speak on the matter.

“In view of the importance of these accusations, we ask the Tánaiste to make an immediate public statement on the veracity of these accusations,” he said.

The Irish examiner has contacted Varadkar to comment on the matter. No statement had been received at the time of publication.
