Scott Penny had two attempts in the fourth quarter during Leinster’s 40-5 Guinness Pro14 win over Cardiff Blues on the RDS.

Penny brought her season’s loot to five attempts, and fellow replacement Michael Silvester added his first senior score, as Leinster claimed a championship record equivalent to the seventh straight bonus point win.

Dave Kearney’s attempt after just 36 seconds, the second-fastest in the Irish province in Pro14 history, put them on track for a 19-5 lead at halftime.

Jimmy O’Brien and Aled Summerhill traded attempts late in the first quarter, with James Tracy mauling just before interval.

Cardiff fought back bravely, but flanker Penny sank twice before Silvester jumped off Harry Byrne’s attractive kick in the 77th minute.

Cardiff selected captain Jarrod Evans failed a late fitness test, so Wales scrum-half Tomos Williams joined as a half behind Jason Tovey.

The visitors were left behind in the opening minute, Leinster center Ciaran Frawley edged past Ben Thomas to send Kearney close to the left corner.

Byrne converted and then added extras to an incredible 14-minute score from full-back O’Brien, who landed on his own chip kick that Tovey couldn’t deal with.

However, Cardiff responded from their first serious attack, deflecting the ball from a maul in the 17th minute for the Summerhill winger to slide into the far corner.

Harry Byrne kicked five conversions

It stayed 14-5 despite some quick shots from Luke McGrath and Cardiff center Thomas, who was starting to turn heads on the attack.

Josh Turnbull and company made a real mess out of the breakdown and Byrne then shot a deflected penalty. But, with a clever kick from O’Brien that forced a late lineout, Leinster’s group successfully defeated hooker Tracy.

Silvester and Summerhill’s breakups were not rewarded early in the second period, and a determined rear guard from Cardiff kept Leinster up twice before Rhys Ruddock received a double move on the test line.

However, with their bank growing in influence, the home team went one step further to maintain their way of earning extra points.

Upping the pace of a Ryan Baird steal at the lineout, a series of pick-and-drives ended with Penny extending in the 66th minute. She did the same five minutes later, helped by a latch from Baird.

Leinster had the last words when Byrne landed a clean kick for Silvester to land next to the posts. The fly-half marked his fifth conversion.
