Latest Covid-19 Ireland Level Five – Everything You Need To Know As New Restrictions To Be Announced

The government will announce a series of new restrictions on Monday in an attempt to combat the spread of Covid-19.

The news was confirmed by Higher Education Minister Simon Harris on Sunday, saying “decisive” action must be taken.

The government rejected a recommendation from health chiefs to move to Level Five two weeks ago, instead of tightening the county-by-county restrictions, something Harris admits didn’t work.

Harris, who was Minister of Health during the first months of the pandemic, urged that the government must balance restrictions with “our honest opinion about what the people can bear or hold.”

So, before Monday’s announcement, we take a look at all the information you need.

As mentioned above, the Cabinet rejected NPHET’s proposal to move the country to a Level Five lockdown two weeks ago.

But the group of medical experts has since made a second recommendation for such a measure, suggesting that it be applied for six weeks.

It comes as Ireland broke its record for the number of cases recorded in a single day for the fourth time in the space of a week on Saturday.

The worrying figures bring our incidence rate over the past 14 days to 232 per 100,000, the 12th highest rate among 31 countries monitored by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control.

When will we know what restrictions are being introduced?

The Cabinet will meet on Monday to discuss the latest advice from health experts, where it will decide whether or not the country should move to Level Five.

If they decide not to, a level four lock will likely be introduced.

If the Government decides not to take such an extreme measure, which is unlikely given Minister Harris’ comments, we could possibly see Ireland remain at Level Three with a list of new regulations.

What did Simon Harris say?

The former health minister told RTE’s This Week In Politics that new restrictions would be introduced for the entire country on Monday.

He said: “The government will act tomorrow, the action will be decisive and it will be action at the national level …

“Tomorrow we will have to introduce more restrictions. Level three has not worked.

“I don’t want to be pedantic with him

“In relation to business, we are trying to strike a balance here.

“We want to stay as open as we can, but we can’t prolong the inevitable either …

“What the government is trying to do is try to find that landing site.”

At what level is Ireland currently?

Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan were placed under Level Four measures during the week after the big peaks in each county in recent weeks.

The other 23 counties in the Republic remain under Tier Three rules.

At Level Four, only essential retail can remain open, although the government has expanded that category since March.

At level five, people will be asked to stay home, in addition to exercising within 5 km, and restaurants can only operate one outlet
home and home service.
