Kilminchy Lodge Nursing Home in Portlaoise

A NURSING home in Portlaoise is dealing with a sudden outbreak of Covid-19, after 18 people tested positive for the virus.
Family members were informed by phone on Friday that routine tests for the coronavirus, carried out the day before, had unfortunately tested positive in 18 cases.
The outbreak at the Kilminchy Lodge nursing home, which has extremely strict Covid-19 protocols, has caused great shock and concern among family members. The nursing home accommodates 52 mainly elderly patients.
A relative told the Laois Nationalist: “It was a great shock, because so far there has not been a single case since the pandemic began. The staff is very good and the nursing home is very well run. All possible precautions were taken and this shows you that no place is safe, no matter how strict the precautions are. “
The pool of 18 positive Covid-19 tests at home was the main cause of a large spike in Laois virus numbers over the weekend, as 28 new cases were announced in the county on Saturday night. Figures refer to 24 hours to midnight last Friday.
It was the highest daily increase in the county since the Covid-19 emergency began. The worst day before in Laois was April 19, at the height of the pandemic, when 21 new cases were reported.
the Laois Nationalist reached out to Kilminchy Nursing Home for comment over the weekend and is awaiting a response from the management team. A member of management said an official statement or response would be available shortly.
According to relatives, the patients who tested positive are being cared for in a separate section of the large single-story nursing home, which has 44 single rooms and a small number of double rooms.
All patients who tested positive for Covid-19 have been isolated and are being cared for in separate rooms. According to relatives, some of those who tested positive have no symptoms of the virus and are doing well.
