TD’s brothers Danny and Michael Healy Rae have been accused of “donning a political disguise” and “a cartoon” to pretend they are working class.
And then it was said yesterday in the Dáil that they drove Mercedes as teenagers while “counting their money” and “counting their properties.”
Kerry’s famous independent representatives enraged Dublin Fingal Labor Party, Duncan Smith, when they accused the Labor Party of being anti-worker with their toughest Covid crackdown proposals yesterday in the Dáil.
Then a fiery dispute erupted when Mr. Smith responded, outlining his working-class roots and criticizing the two brothers as coming from a privileged class.
Mr. Smith said: “What really caught me in this discussion today were the contributions from Healy-Raes.
“I am absolutely disgusted that he hit me personally.
Then he became more passionate when he added: “I am the son of a carpenter.
“I am not the son of the privilege of Fianna Fáil and millions and millions of euros.
“I remember, as a kid in the 1980s, having to take any job, hanging doors in Finglas just to put a roof over our heads and food on the table.
“I remember that.
“I spent my teens working on sites, filling containers.
“Did they?
“Or were they driving their Mercedes to their big plant rental shops, passing all their machinery, worth hundreds of thousands, to count all their money, to count all their properties?”
Unsurprisingly, both Healy Raes almost exploded at these comments and yelled at Mr. Smith, “It’s not like that, it’s not like that. It’s not, it’s not like that. “
But Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghail, had none of the Kerry TD stuff, since Mr. Smith had the official space to speak.
The Dáil chairman allowed the Labor TD to continue, and Smith added fuel to the fire.
He said: “I have the floor.
“They are not going to give me lessons on how to understand workers.
“I don’t have to put on a political disguise and a cartoon to pretend I’m working class, like some.
“They do.
“This is a motion in favor of the workers.
“If you read it, if you understood it, if you took a second to get away from your own regressive politics, you would see that this position is about a strong public health response to get people to go back to work and stay at work, to open schools and keep them open …… .. They are following a narrow, regressive and conservative agenda all the time.
“It disappoints the people of Kerry they profess to represent; it lets the workers down. “
