Jurgen Klopp insisted that they were positive aspects of his close FA Cup loss to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Liverpool took an early lead thanks to a majestic chip from Mo Salah over Dean Henderson. But Man United soon responded to the counterattack.

The move was led by Marcus Rashford, who unleashed a precise cross pass to Mason Greenwood. The young forward took it to his chest before finishing it well past Alisson.

The hosts completed their fight and took the lead shortly after the restart. Rhys Williams was unable to clear which allowed Rashford to advance towards goal. The forward was not wrong by calmly placing him in the bottom corner to make it 2-1.

However, United’s lead only lasts ten minutes. Roberto Firmino let Salah in, who was able to shoot up close for his second goal of the game.

Liverpool grew in confidence from this point on and seemed more likely to score the winning goal. But in the 78th minute, Edinson Cavani won a free kick on the edge of the area when he was brought down by Fabinho.

Bruno Fernandes stepped up to grab it and slammed the ball into the far lower corner of Alisson on goal to send United into the fifth round.

Talking after the game with BBC Sport, Klopp admitted that his team struggled with Man United’s “intense” counterattacks:

“There were a lot of good things and some mistakes in the goals. If you want to win here you have to be absolutely at the top and we weren’t.

“For the first goal we didn’t have protection, we wanted it too much. Things like this shouldn’t happen but they can. We had too many platers in reception position.

“We can get things out of this game, we try to learn from each game. It’s good for Mo Salah, good for confidence. It was a tough game. We want him hard, but tonight has not been enough.

“If you win a game, there are negative points, if you lose a game too, but I saw that the guys really loved him very much. We had problems in the counterattack, it was intense, but there were positive aspects ”.
