Klopp: Liverpool ‘deserved’ to lose to Atalanta

Jurgen Klopp has admitted that Liverpool deserved to lose a “difficult” game against Atalanta.

The Reds fell in a disappointing loss to the Italian team in Group D on Wednesday night. Klopp’s team never got going and failed to register a shot on goal during the 90 minutes.

Atalanta was clearly the best team. Their hard work was rewarded in the second half with two goals in just four minutes.

F365 SAYS: Klopp can’t blame matches for low record in Liverpool

Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens scored the goals to secure Atalanta a historic victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

Despite this result, Liverpool continues to lead the group. But Ajax’s victory over FC Midtjylland leaves the Dutch team and Atalanta two points behind Liverpool.

Klopp’s men host Ajax next week before facing Midtjylland in their final group game on December 9.

The Liverpool manager spoke to BT Sport, quoted by BBC Sport, after the game, and insisted that Atalanta deserved all three points:

“It was not a good game. Of both teams, they didn’t create much, until they scored the goals.

“A deserved defeat in a difficult game. The referee did not whistle much and that makes it even more difficult, for both sides. It was incredibly intense and you need some breaks.

“When the first half is over, you usually settle, but for some players who didn’t play for a while it was very intense for them. We can’t find a way in the game.

“It’s easier to talk about a good game. We had moments but no real opportunities. It could happen to other teams. You ask us to come on Saturday at 12:30, which is almost a crime. That has nothing to do with the result, but congratulations.

“Thumbs up, no injuries and we go again.”

Liverpool were destined to run out of strength. David Moyes was not supposed to continue working. Whoops!
