Jurgen Klopp says he was never worried about Roberto Firmino’s lack of goals after he led Liverpool to a Victory 2-1 at Tottenham.
Mohamed Salah’s first goal was disallowed by Son Heung-min in the first half, before Firmino won the match with a brilliant late header.
It was just the Brazilian’s third goal in a season in which his place at Liverpool is questioned.
16 Conclusions: Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham
But not for Klopp, who praised Firmino’s complete game but also seemed to contradict himself.
The Liverpool manager said that the team that scores goals is “the only thing that matters”, before explaining the importance of “the way” in which goals are scored.
“I just hope he never doubts himself, there’s a lot of talk about it, but I just said ‘Bobby, you scored,'” Klopp said.
“He scores important goals for us. And it’s not so much about who scores them because for us the only thing that matters is the ball in the back of the net.
“For us it’s about the road, how we get there, things like crossing, passing, finishing. But racing to open the gaps, not everyone sees that.
“I get it, but I’m not surprised Bobby scores goals. I’m happy that he scored tonight because it was very important for him as well, but more so for us.
“So let’s move on.”
