A leading Killarney hotel has insisted it is “meeting the guidelines” after photos surfaced showing hundreds of people at an indoor concert Saturday night.
A guest at the event said she saw the Gina and The Champions band on stage in the grand ballroom at the Gleneagle Hotel Killarney in front of a large crowd.
She and two friends were returning from dinner when they heard loud chanting from the great hall.
“We were appalled,” he said. “I was so surprised that I looked up the guidelines for indoor meetings when I walked in,” she told the Irish Mirror.
“I was scared for my elderly mother and those at the concert, it was packed and the audience was mostly older people who should be reducing their contacts.”
In a statement, the Gleneagle Hotel did not comment on the report that there were up to 400 people in the ballroom.
However, he insisted that he adhered to the guidelines for “controlled environments” as outlined in Fáilte Ireland’s guidelines for hotels “which state that pubs, cafes and restaurants (including hotels, restaurants and bars) may open with measures of protection established “.
The maximum numbers are tied to the capacity of the facilities, taking into account the appropriate physical spacing, the hotel said.
“We have opened our largest venue, INEC, as a restaurant and lounge for residents to ensure that our guests have ample space to socially distance themselves.
“Normally, INEC can accommodate 4,142 people in a seated and standing event and 2,142 in a fully seated event and is only open for large concerts and conferences. All concerts and events previously scheduled to take place at INEC have been canceled or postponed, ”the statement read.
“We carefully choose low-volume, low-key acts. This is a controlled environment with strict social distancing measures, ”the statement added.
He said table service is mandatory and food is served throughout the night. Dancing is not allowed and all guests must remain within their family groups at the assigned table. Staff are present at all times to ensure social distancing measures are adhered to, he said.
