Killarney scenes avoidable if all pubs open

Kerry’s independent TD, Michael Healy-Rae, has said that antisocial behavior in Killarney on Saturday night could be used to persuade the government to open all the bars.

Images of a large and raucous group of people drinking and singing on the street and not observing social distancing on Main Street were captured on video and have been widely shared on social media.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Morning Ireland, Mr. Healy-Rae described the events as “most unfortunate” but said that “if our bars are open, people will get alcohol in a measured and sensible way from responsible people who have They have to appear before our courts every 12 months, which run what I would call respectable public houses. “

Mr. Healy-Rae said that while he does adhere to the public health council, he does not have to “blindly agree” with it.

He said it does not mean “that they are 100% right in everything they say.”

He said that people cannot explain the difference between what is called a wet tavern and a tavern that serves food.

The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce released a statement saying it is very disappointed by the incident.

“An overwhelming majority of people in Killarney and businesses in the city have adhered to the public health guidelines and restrictions introduced by the Government and the Health Services Executive during the course of the pandemic.

“It is disappointing that some people find it appropriate to act irresponsibly with little or no respect for others,” said the statement from Speaker of the House, Paul Sherry.

Yesterday, Killarney Mayor Cllr Brendan Cronin called those scenes “embarrassing” and called on Gardaí to take a firmer approach.

“At a time when we cannot go to see a football game, in which weddings and other family occasions are postponed, the behavior seen last night in our town was nothing less than showing two fingers to all who have invested a lot of time and effort to make Killarney safe, “he said.
