Tarbert Comprehensive School principal Richard Prendiville told parents he “has no choice but to comply” even though seven students tested positive and 45 others were deemed close contact.

Mr. Prendiville disclosed that he made the decision to close after consulting with the Chairman of the Board of Directors and said it was made in the “best interest” of the school.

Furthermore, the decision to close the school was made “based on the autonomy” that had been given to the school.

In a letter to parents, he said: “The Department of Education and Skills has contacted me and expressed a difference of opinion regarding this closure.

‘NATIONAL POLICE’

“The Department believes, in accordance with national policy, that individually affected students should remain out of school in lieu of a decision to close school entirely.”

He continued: “Therefore, DES reversed the decision to close Tarbert Comprehensive School and ordered me to reopen as of tomorrow morning (Wednesday).

“Naturally, I have no choice but to comply with your instructions.”

Mr. Prendiville revealed that four sophomores, two juniors and one studying for his certificate of completion had contracted the virus that led to the initial shutdown.

‘TOP RULE’

He added: “To conclude, my general rule throughout my career has been what is the right thing to do in every circumstance I am faced with.

“This situation was no different. “I will continue, to the best of my ability, in consultation with all school stakeholders to manage and protect the health, safety, and welfare of all individuals to the best of my ability.”

Listowel Cathaoirleach Michael Foley said: “My own daughter goes there. The director made the right decision.

“He took the appropriate action, but unfortunately the Department did not think so.

“My wife and I are thinking ‘we send our daughter tomorrow.’

“I don’t think we will. A lot of parents think he made the right decision.

“I think many parents will not send their children tomorrow.”
