Roy Keane says Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be fired by Manchester United if he doesn’t finish in the top four this season.
United started this campaign with a loss to Crystal Palace and a The ‘novelty’ beats Brighton which exposed many of its shortcomings.
That win over the Seagulls was so unconvincing that they made the last section of our Premier League Winners and Losers Column.
Former captain Keane spoke about the club and the manager at Sky Sports and said the pressure is now on the Norwegian.
“The mandate will be different for Ole this year. I think last year they tried to get into the top four, I know they made it to three semi-finals, but it will be higher this year.
“They will surely have to get a little closer to Liverpool and Manchester City. Total points cannot be the same as it has been for the last three or four years.
“Ole will probably have to get a trophy. I think the honeymoon period is certainly over for Ole, and the pressure is starting to mount now, particularly with performances like that over the last week or so. “
When asked if not finishing in the top four could spell the end of Solskjaer, Keane said: “Yeah, I think so. If you are the manager of Man United, and they can invest in the next week and buy one or two… if they don’t invest in the next week, then tough days are ahead.
“It hasn’t been great so far. Obviously they would have liked the result against Brighton. But there are already worrying signs in the first week.
“It’s early but they’ve given up a lot of goals and a lot of chances against Crystal Palace and Brighton, so the signs are not good. It would be different if it was against Manchester City or Liverpool, with their brilliant attacking players, but one would hope they did better against Palace.
“The opportunities that Brighton created … they are all focused on defending how poor they have been, but as a whole team it hasn’t been great with the amount of opportunities they are leaving.”
