A woman who cut her hand with a circular saw in hopes of obtaining an insurance payment of 1 million euros (£ 925,000) was sentenced to two years in prison.
Julija Adlesic, 22, from Slovenia, conspired with her boyfriend to have her left hand cut off above the wrist at their home in the capital, Ljubljana, early last year.
Adlesic was found guilty of attempted insurance fraud by a city court.
He stood up to collect more than 1 million euros, about half due immediately, after signing insurance agreements with five different providers about a year earlier, the court heard.
Her boyfriend was sentenced to three years in prison, while her father received a one-year suspended sentence.
Days before the incident, her partner had searched the Internet for information about how artificial hands work, prosecutors said, calling it further proof that it was done deliberately.
The couple had taken her to the hospital, saying she had injured herself while cutting branches, but they left her severed hand behind, rather than bringing her with them.
They wanted to make sure the disability was permanent, the court heard, but the police recovered the hand and reattached it.
During the trial, Adlesic claimed he was innocent and said that he would never have deliberately cut his hand.
“Nobody wants to be crippled. My youth has been destroyed. I lost my hand at the age of 20. Only I know how it happened.”
The trial has attracted much attention from the public and the country’s media.
Judge Marjeta Dvornik said: “We believe that the sentences are fair and appropriate and will serve their purpose.”
