Johnny Depp has been forced to quit his role in Fantastic beasts 3 after losing his libel lawsuit against Sun Newspaper.
Depp, writing on Instagram, said that AT&T Inc’s Warner Bros film studio had asked him to step down from his role as villain Gellert Grindelwald. “I have respected and accepted that request,” he said.
Sky News reports that Depp’s role as the dark wizard Grindelwald in the franchise is understood to have already been modified.
The 57-year-old actor said he had accepted a request to resign from the role, but said on social media that the “surreal judgment” of the High Court trial “will not change my fight to tell the truth.”
In a court ruling in London earlier this week, Judge Nicol ruled that a report in Sun Claiming that Depp was violent towards his ex-wife Amber Heard was “substantially true.”
The ruling has cast doubt on the actor’s future and commentators wonder if any major film studios will be willing to work with him again.
In April 2018 Sun Report, titled “Gone Potty: How Can JK Rowling Be ‘Genuinely Happy’ in the Johnny Depp Cast in the New Fantastic Beasts Movie?”, allegations were made about Depp’s drug and alcohol abuse and his treatment of Heard .
Depp sued the newspaper and both he and Heard testified in court. Depp told the Superior Court that the article had caused serious damage to his personal and professional reputation.
However, the judge did not rule in their favor and ruled that while Depp “proved the necessary elements of their defamation cause of action,” News Group Newspapers demonstrated that what they published was “substantially true.”
Depp’s legal team has said they will appeal the decision, calling it “as perverse as it is puzzling” and “flawed.”
Fantastic Animals Author JK Rowling has not commented on Depp’s departure from the film franchise.
