Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has withdrawn from the England team after suffering a knee problem, the Football Association announced.
The 23-year-old center-back suffered the injury in training at St George’s Park.
He has retired from the squad to face the Republic of Ireland, Iceland and Denmark and has returned to his club for a more in-depth diagnosis.
Gomez’s absence could be a blow to the Reds’ title defense, as well as to England’s hopes of reaching the Nations League final.
Harry Maguire, the world’s most expensive defender, is suspended for Sunday’s decisive trip to Belgium, which is number one in the FIFA world rankings.
The Three Lions round out 2020 with a Nations League match against Iceland next Wednesday, although it is unclear if that match will be played at Wembley.
