Joe Canning is reportedly suffering a concussion after the Galway forward suffered a potentially serious injury in Ireland’s semi-final loss to Limerick tonight.
The Tribesmen ace scored twelve points, including four band cuts, but his evening was cut short after a nasty collision with his teammate Joseph Cooney.
Canning dispossessed a Limerick defender and when he leaned over to pick up the ball, he collided with a running Cooney.
The defender appeared to hit Canning’s neck or head as Portumna’s man fell to the ground.
He was treated for several minutes on the field before being worrisomely stretched out with a head brace as fears grew that he might have suffered a neck injury.
There were more than nine minutes of injury time played at Croke Park as a result of the injury.
RTE Sport reported that the injury sustained was not a neck injury and that Canning suffered a suspected concussion after the game, but Galway boss Shane O’Neill did not confirm his condition.
Speaking to reporters a few minutes after the final whistle, O’Neill said he still hadn’t found out how Canning was doing.
“I don’t know,” O’Neill said. “He’s in the medical room and I haven’t had a chance to check the situation yet.”
“It was an epic battle between two ridiculously good sides, I just thought it was extremely difficult for both sides, extremely physical, there wasn’t a lot of space and it was a credit to the guys to exploit it and that makes me proud of what they accomplished with the performance.”
