Jim Bolger returned to the Group 1 table for the first time in three years with a victory written in the stars as Mac Swiney proved himself a fearless winner of the Vertem Futurity Trophy.
The son of Bolger Derby-winning father New Approach, Mac Swiney is named after Irish political figure Terence MacSwiney, who died Sunday on a 74-day hunger strike in Brixton prison 100 years ago.
The youthful gave his coach a high-level first hit since Verbal Dexterity at the 2017 National Stakes after staying powerful to beat One Ruler, who took over the favoritism after the 11th hour withdrawal of favorite Wembley due to difficult terrain.
Like many of his house servants, Bolger named Mac Swiney and the 12-1 shot also showed great timing in the race, taking the lead in the last furlong to bravely fight Kevin Manning.

Bolger, 78, stayed home and told Sky Sports Racing: “He has been constantly improving for the last six weeks. While he would prefer better terrain, we felt he would top the terrain today and he has done really well.
“I have considered him my Derby horse since he first went to the races and after today that opinion is not going to change.
“I must have known it was good in January when I called him Mac Swiney because it would not have been good for me or anyone here to name a horse after a Cork man who was not able to give birth, especially important Cork man.
“He was one of our outstanding patriots and I am touched by his memory and his extended family today that this horse was able to go back 100 years after his death and win the way he did.”
The size of the task was reduced with Wembley’s absence but, as Manning later pointed out, Mac Swiney had beaten Aidan O’Brien’s stew on a Curragh maiden in July.

While the last three winners of the final Group 1 of the British season have won all 2,000 Guineas, the mile contest has also been a great source of Derby heroes and Mac Swiney was 20-1 (out of 40) for Paddy Power’s Epsom Classic.
Manning, 53, said: “I think he’s a good horse and his form is excellent. He won the Futurity [at the Curragh] in soft and the extra stadium was always going to get a little more out of him.
“I think when I go back up on the road next year, with a winter under my belt, it will be a real one. The better the race, the better you will see it, and it probably has a lot more pace than we give it credit for.”
Manning, whose last winner in Britain arrived in 2015, will have to be quarantined upon his return to Ireland, but it turned out to be a worthwhile journey for Bolger, who had a day to remember as he also raised Group winner Gear Up. 1. Saint-Cloud Criterium for Mark Johnston.
“It’s great to win Group 1 again. We have had some wonderful years together and they have already placed us in this race,” added the jockey.
“Jim didn’t come because of all the gibberish that goes with it. You have to get tested here and when I get back. I have to quarantine myself and I can’t mix with any rider for 14 days, but that’s the way it is and it has to be done.”
