A Donegal motorist gave a garda sergeant the wrong name ‘Pete Doherty’ when he was stopped driving in Cork and it turned out that he had ten previous convictions for driving without insurance and was a disqualified driver.

That was on July 24 in Meenane, Watergrasshill, County Cork, and today in Cork District Court, the driver, whose real name is Dean Wells, was sentenced to five months in jail.

Sergeant John McNamara testified that he pulled over the motorist in July and asked for his name and claimed he was Pete Doherty.

It was later established that his correct name was Dean Wells and that he resided in Nutgrove, Ballindangan, Mitchelstown, County Cork.

Sergeant. McNamara said today that Wells, 36, had 69 prior convictions. They included four for dangerous driving, ten for driving without insurance and four for driving stolen cars.

He also had convictions for crimes of public order, theft and fraud.

Defense attorney Killian McCarthy said the defendant had had no problems since 2016 and had a full-time job. In fact, his employer was present in court with him today and bailed him out pending an appeal of the jail sentence.

McCarthy said the defendant regained his life four years ago and that his crime predated that period and occurred in Donegal.

The defendant is 36 years old and from Letterkenny.

“He admits the offenses and acknowledges that they were completely wrong. She has gone to court to acknowledge her crimes. Your employer is here to prove your good character. She is a valuable asset for the company where she works ”, said the lawyer.

Judge Olann Kelleher said, “This man doesn’t have ten insurance convictions.” The judge imposed simultaneous sentences of five months in jail for driving without insurance and while disqualified. He fined him 750 euros for giving the sergeant a false name. McNamara.

Today an eight-year driving ban was also imposed on him. The acknowledgments in case of appeal were set at € 850 in cash and an independent guarantee of € 850.
