Double champion of Europe. Double world champion.
These are heady times for Sanita Puspure and the Irish T-shirt is taking the growing expectation around her in stride.
The 38-year-old woman successfully defended her women’s rowing title at the European Rowing Championships in Poland on a day when Ireland also claimed bronze medals in three other events.
Puspure was second after 500 meters when Magdalena Lobnig of Austria took the initial lead, but took control midway through and pulled away in the final 1000 meters to overcome Lobnig’s challenge.
“It’s really amazing. Every time you go out, there are more and more expectations to continue that winning streak,” he said.
“It’s very nice to do it for the fourth time. I’m quite happy.”
The Latvian-born athlete says her run to the Championship was low-key and exactly what she needed.

“Mentally, I feel much better. I had three weeks of vacation. I met my family, my mother and my nephews. It was a really nice recovery, no pressure with training.
“There was a bit of pressure on the Europeans as we only trained for six or seven weeks.”

Puspure admitted that he had something in store in the previous round and that the final strategy of the race went according to plan.
She also thanked the many fans at home who have encouraged her to continue to be successful.
