A man has been jailed for causing a riot in the city center, including one in which he tried to bite a guard and it took eight gardaí to detain and arrest him.

Sergeant John Kelleher described the scene yesterday in the Cork District Court.

On September 16 at 2.15pm, Garda Patrick Houlihan responded to a call about a drunken man abusing staff at Deerpark House, Cork.

“Upon reaching the scene, Garda Houlihan was met by Finbarr Geary, who was unsteady on his feet and had an open bottle of vodka in hand.

“When Garda Houlihan asked him to leave the area, he approached him with his hands in the direction of Garda Houlihan’s face. He then kicked and tried to bite Garda Houlihan.

“He continued to be aggressive and resisted arrest and Garda assistance had to be called to the scene. It took eight gardaí to hold it down, ”said Sergeant Kelleher.

Two other incidents were described, in which Geary also pleaded guilty to engaging in threatening behavior and being drunk and being a source of danger.

On August 17, Garda Brendan McBride arrived on Clontarf Street after 8 p.m. and found that the defendant himself was intoxicated and was being aggressive towards the public passing him on the street.

“Mr. Geary declined to answer Garda McBride’s questions, such as his personal information or why he was being aggressive.

“Then he got aggressive with Garda McBride, clenching his teeth and clenching his fists, cursing and telling Garda McBride to fuck off.

“Garda McBride told him to desist from his aggressive behavior, but he did not comply on several occasions and eventually had to be pepper sprayed and arrested.”

And in an earlier incident on August 7 on Winthrop Street, Garda Cian Foley observed that the defendant was molesting a group of people in the area at 11:30 pm and again the defendant was threatening and drunk.

Judge Olann Kelleher noted that the defendant, Finbarr Geary, had received nine suspended sentences in the past. “That must be a record,” the judge commented.

Between the reversal of sentences that included four-month sentences and new two-month sentences for threatening behavior in recent incidents, the total jail sentence imposed on Geary yesterday was six months.

Frank Buttimer, an attorney, said the defendants had a very difficult record.

“He accepts that he has not taken the risks that the court has given him. He is 40 years old and is now separated from his family in Cork. He has chronic alcoholism that is not treated, ”said the lawyer.

It said the defendant had been living between the streets and a shelter and had made some unsuccessful efforts to deal with his alcohol problem.

“He’s got it really bad,” Buttimer said.
