Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan warned that it is vital that Covid-19 transmission in Ireland is interrupted now.

He spoke after confirmation yesterday of the death of five other people with coronavirus.

The highest number of new coronavirus cases since April was also confirmed, with 617 in the last 24 hours.

It is the third time in a week that the number of daily cases of Covid-19 exceeds 600.

Dr. Holohan said the infection profile continued to deteriorate and, before the weekend, early and individual action was needed on the part of people to suppress the virus by following public health guidelines and restrictions.

The figures also show that the number of people hospitalized with Covid-19 continues to rise.

At 20:00 yesterday there were 187 patients in treatment, of which 31 were in intensive care units.

Both figures are the highest since the beginning of June.

Meanwhile, a new system of graduated fines will be introduced to ensure public health compliance in order to suppress the spread of the virus.

The system will be used when people violate regulations, such as not wearing a face shield when necessary.

The decision was agreed upon by the Cabinet Subcommittee on Covid-19 last night.

It is understood that the scale of the fines was not decided.

Now the ministers of Health and Justice will draft the legislation.
