RTÉ executives hope to replicate the BBC’s hit telethon The Big Night In, which raised over € 30 million for front-line workers and those affected by Covid-19.
ndependent.ie has learned that the national station wants it to take place on May 30.
According to a RTÉ source, the show would be inspired by the BBC version, which was a great success last month.
RTÉ is going through the logistics necessary to organize a similar show, with an Irish cast raising money for those affected by the pandemic.
The show will consist of live broadcasts from the studio, as well as some prerecorded sketches and carefully written musical performances.
“The idea is for the public to commit to the show over the course of the night, with a grand total reached at the end,” the source said.
“This is the kind of show that could really lift the nation for three hours.”
A number of Irish comics, including Deirdre O’Kane, Tommy Tiernan and Jason Byrne, have been contacted to participate in the broadcast, while Westlife is also in talks.
Other renowned acts such as Niall Horan and U2 are likely to be addressed.
A RTÉ spokesperson said: “RTÉ has been constantly looking for new ways to work in line with restrictions to air existing programs and is also looking for new program ideas and models to keep people entertained and informed.”
