Restaurants and pubs that serve food are gearing up for a reopening date next Friday after crucial government talks last night.
The gastronomic bars that opened their doors was the last compromise proposal that was achieved with Friday seen as a “fair date” that gives the pubs three weekends before Christmas.
A source from Government Buildings told Dublin Live that there would be no point in leaving it until the following week as this would only allow for two weeks and two full trading weekends, after all the trouble to reopen was taken.
The source said that at least if they open in time for next Friday, they can have three good weekends.
Another factor is that next Friday will also give a decent turn-in time for restaurateurs and food pubs to organize their staff and stock before business resumes.
However, the sources also noted that while much of the heavy lifting has been done by officials, the final decision will still rest with the three government leaders, Taoiseach Micheál Martin, Tánaiste Leo Varadkar and Green Party leader Eamon Ryan.
They will meet today to discuss NPHET’s recommendations before making the decision to present an announcement to Cabinet on Friday ahead of The Late Late Toy Show.
Bars that want to reopen in December must have a kitchen and chef on-site, supposedly ending companies “joining in” and serving food from elsewhere.
Currently, the Government is studying new restrictions that would reduce the opening of pubs in the coming weeks.
This means that only “genuine gourmet pubs” will be allowed to serve indoors, preventing venues from serving drinks to customers while providing food from another nearby business.
Restaurants will reopen next week if the number of coronavirus cases falls below 300 a day.
But the chances of wet pubs (bars that don’t serve food) getting a break are out, and a source told Dublin Live: “sadly, there is no hope for wet pubs.”
The hotel industry has been told that the magic number of Covid cases that will allow for a massive reopening of restaurants next week will be “in the 200s.”

Gastronomic bars will also be given the go-ahead, but some form of the controversial “€ 9 substantial meal” will still apply.
