An Irish couple have been charged with allegedly stabbing a man in Australia on Saturday night.

Katie Aileen Murtagh, 26, of Dublin, and her boyfriend Patrick Earle, 23, of Kilkenny, are charged with the serious assault of Oliver Solan, 30, in an apartment on Young Street in the eastern suburb of Randwick , Sydney.

Four other Irish men, believed to be involved in the alleged assault, are central to the New South Wales police investigation.

NSW police believe that Earle and four other men allegedly attacked Mr. Solan around 8.40pm while he lay motionless on the apartment floor, using a knife to cut off part of his ear.

Mr. Solan was left with head injuries and a ruptured spleen.

Officers from the Eastern Beaches Police Area Command attended and found Mr. Solan with stab wounds.

He was treated by paramedics and taken to St Vincent Hospital in Sydney, where he underwent surgery. The victim remains in serious but stable condition.

According to a statement from NSW police, a second man, aged 23, was found nearby on Botany Street with a wound to his arm and was taken to Prince of Wales Hospital for treatment.

Earle and the victim, who know each other, were involved in a physical altercation after an argument, before the older man was allegedly stabbed.

The defendant was detained at Prince of Wales Hospital, where he was treated for an arm injury.

“A crime scene was set up with detectives beginning the investigation,” the police statement added.

Following inquiries, Murtagh was arrested at the apartment and taken to Maroubra Police Station, along with the young man after being released from the hospital.

The Waverley Local Court denied the couple bail and will remain in custody until October 27.

The court was told that Earle faces a maximum of 25 years in prison if convicted, with a standard period without parole of seven years.

Police allege that Murtagh was aware of what would happen when she invited and let her boyfriend’s group of backup friends into her apartment.

According to Australian media reports, when Murtagh’s boyfriend and the four men fled, CCTV footage allegedly shows that she uses her strength to drag Mr. Solan’s body into the hallway.

Concerned neighbors called the police when they found Mr. Solan.

While paramedics treated Mr. Solan, police searched the area for Earle, Murtagh and the other alleged assailants.

Police are still searching for at least four other men involved in the alleged attack, but they are believed to know their identities.

In a statement, the police said: “Following the investigations, the police have obtained images of four men who they believe could help with the investigation. Detectives believe the four men are Irish citizens. “
