Ireland’s optimism did not diminish after the defeat to Germany

Republic of Ireland internationals Loiuse Quinn and Katie McCabe are eager to get over the disappointment of not being able to qualify for Euro 2022 after falling short of Germany at Tallaght Stadium.

Ukraine secured a play-off berth at the expense of Ireland with a 2-1 win over Montenegro, while Group I winners Germany inflicted a 3-1 defeat on Vera Pauw’s players.

Quinn admitted that surprising Germany was always a long shot, but she was proud of the efforts of her teammates.

“Overall, it was a very difficult question,” he said.

“But to see how we go about it, I know it looks like we were on defense, and we were, but we wanted to stay in the game and try to get those attacks and take advantage of those opportunities.

“We had an attack just before the half to go back to 2-1 and the belief was incredible to go ahead and score again. We kept them quiet.”

Tabea Wassmuth’s second goal on the night put an end to hopes of an Ireland comeback, but many will point to missed opportunities against Ukraine and Greece as Ireland’s undoing in terms of clinching a play-off berth. But Quinn remains philosophical and optimistic for the future.

“There are many things there that you can look back on and want to change, but we can’t, we can only look forward, not take it as regret, but learn from it.”

McCabe, who scored Ireland’s goal in the first half from the penalty spot, said: “The girls are devastated there

“We’re really heartbroken. We gave it our all tonight and it just wasn’t like that.

“But we have so much youth and experience, it is only the beginning, and we are going to do everything we can to refocus on 2021 and the World Cup campaign will be our next focus.”
