More than 1 million people will have received a Covid-19 puncture in Ireland next week, the HSE chief executive said.
Speaking on Saturday, HSE chief Paul Reid said a record number of vaccinations were administered on Friday and that for the next week.
It comes as Ireland saw another 511 Covid-19 cases on Saturday.
Mr. Reid said on Twitter: “Yesterday, Good Friday, we had one of our highest days yet for the administration of the vaccine.
“We will have completed more than 900,000 by this weekend. Over the next week, we will have administered more than 1 million doses.
“April and May will expand the program even more.”
The launch of the vaccine in Ireland has come under heavy criticism for its slow pace, however there is hope that the program will intensify in the coming weeks.
More than 6,000 people will be vaccinated at DCU this weekend, which saw large crowds lining up to receive their vaccinations.
The country will see the relaxation of Covid restrictions as of April 12, as the country still remains under a Level Five lockdown.
In an address to the nation on Easter weekend, the Taosieach said: “This Easter will be different and we will not celebrate it in the usual way.”
“And I know how exhausting the sacrifices have been during the pandemic. But I can assure you that your efforts have really worked.
“Thanks to their actions and the launch of the vaccine, the levels of severe disease and mortality caused by the new variant have decreased significantly.
“This Easter, the way forward is clear … Simply put, if we stick to the rules now and keep Covid numbers low, the vaccination program offers the promise of more freedom this summer.”
People were warned yesterday not to travel to vacation homes at Easter and to stay within the 5km limit.
There will be a strong Garda presence on the country’s roads and in beautiful locations to deter those who are thinking of breaking the rules.
Donegal Division Chief Superintendent Terry McGinn said: “A Garda Siochana is appealing to the public this Easter to continue to follow public health guidelines by staying home and safe.
“We, as individuals, have the power to protect ourselves and our communities. The best way to stay safe is to stay home.
“If you are going out, take the necessary trips and exercise within 5 km of your home.”
