Ireland will receive up to 9,750 doses of the Covid vaccine by the end of the week after Europe’s drug regulator recommended conditional approval for the vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech.
Ireland is set to receive two shipments of the vaccine just after Christmas Day, according to The Irish Times.
Shipments come in various sizes, from 195 vials of the vaccine to 975 vials. Each vial contains five doses of the vaccine.
At the moment, it is not clear how big the two Irish shipments will be. However, industry sources expect them to be on the higher end.
Shipments are expected on St. Stephen’s Day, though that could change depending on final EU approvals.
European Union countries, including Germany, Austria and Italy, have said they plan to start vaccinations from December 27.
The schedule for vaccination in Ireland has yet to be confirmed, but Taoiseach Micheál Martin said earlier that Ireland would be ready to start administering the vaccine once the European Medicines Agency (EMA) makes its decision.
📢 The EMA has just recommended the granting of a conditional marketing authorization for #Vaccine for COVID-19 developed by BioNTech / Pfizer, to prevent # COVID-19 in people from 16 years of age.

The EMA was due to announce its findings on December 29, but came under increasing pressure following the approval of the Pfizer vaccine by the United Kingdom and the United States, where vaccination began earlier this month.
The government’s vaccination strategy and implementation plan were published last week, detailing people over 65 who reside long-term in care facilities and health workers in direct contact with Covid-19 would be the first groups. to receive the vaccine in Ireland.
When the doses arrive here, the injections will be administered in five key settings: long-term care facilities, large-scale healthcare facilities, mass vaccination centers, GP’s offices, and community pharmacies.
