It looks like we are ready to get off to a bitter and icy start to 2021 with the cold snap to continue.
Temperatures will drop to as low as -3 ° C over the weekend, according to Met Eireann, who said winter showers of sleet and snow are on the cards for most areas.
There will be good spells of sunshine and dry conditions during the early days of the New Year, but meteorologists added that the freezing conditions will continue into next week.
A Met Eireann spokesperson told the Irish Mirror: “There really is no end in sight to the cold weather. Looks like it’s going to stay cold for the next week at least.
“Today it will be cold with low daytime temperatures of 3 ° C to 6 ° C, but there will be a lot of dry and bright weather.
“Tonight it will be cold and icy with widespread temperatures of 0 ° C to -2 ° C and possibly as low as -3 ° C in some places, so it will be another cold and icy night.”
However, there is not much hope for snowmen, as meteorologists say the white matter will settle only on higher ground, as rains are expected across the country, and many of them will turn icy.
The Met Eireann forecaster said: “Due to frequent rains any accumulation of snow is likely to clear fairly quickly, however you will see accumulations in mountainous areas.
“Tomorrow there will be rains moving inland from the west, some of which could turn winter. Saturday night will be very cold with temperatures as low as -2 ° C or -3 ° C across the country. “
